There’s plenty to see and do in Louisville, KY – the city on the Ohio River named in honor of King Louis XVI of France. There is something for everyone. Here’s a short list of must see places while you’re in town.
Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory
A member of the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame, the Louisville Slugger Museum tells an important history about a very important piece of baseball – the bat. A family business since 1864, the company started by making things like balusters and bedposts, but became world famous after creating bats for some of the biggest names in baseball history. Contrary to popular belief, the title “Louisville Slugger” wasn’t the original name of the now famous bat. Louisville Slugger was the nickname for Pete Browning, a famous baseball player for a Louisville team known as the Eclipse in the 1800s. According to legend, Browning was the first professional ball player to use a bat from what would become known as the famous Louisville Slugger company.
Louisville Mega Cavern
Considered by many to be Louisville’s best kept secret, this cavern was formed as a mine and limestone quarry. It would go on to serve as a fallout shelter during the Cold War. By the middle of the 1970s, mining stopped as the supply of mineable limestone was considered exhausted. Investors purchased the area at the end of the 1980s and transformed the space into a high security business park. Despite the fact that it’s located underground, the internal support structure of the cavern allows the space to be classified as a building, which makes this attraction the largest building in the state of Kentucky.
